Richard asks…
Online “Instant Quotes” Insurance for teenagers?
Out of curiosity, I happend to try the “Instant quote” thingadoodles on the various insurance websites (progressive in particular)… and knowing how high insurance is for teenagers, I decided to try getting a quote for an 18 year old, on various vehicles (ones I own in particular).
Basically, I got the quote for a 1998 Ford Crown Victoria (non-P71), and the outcome was right around $2500… for six months??? That’s $5000 a year!
Are these online insurance quotes realistic? I see a lot of kids driving full size trucks around, and I really wonder how they can afford insurance… but for a fat-cat luxury car, they’re charging horrendously!
Are these quotes realistic? Next up, I really wonder how all of these kids are driving SUV’s and full size trucks.
I should also say that this stems from a friend’s son I am taking to the next State Surplus Auction, so that he can purchase his first car (His parents are working the day of the auction). He wanted to get one, because they were inexpensive, and parts were cheap… but wow. The insurance is ridiculous.
I should say, this is for an 18 year old, for his first car. He will be under his parent’s insurance… I seriously think this quote is outrageous. I’ve seen this kid’s friends driving full size trucks (Dodge Rams, F150′s, Chevy 1500′s, etc) and mustangs… how the f*ck can they afford the insurance on those, while they’re charging this much for a luxury car???
By the way, this is the bottom-line quote… as in, minimum legal coverage.

Damn, that is insane. I did all the online quote things and Geico came out the cheapest. I pay around $36 a month and that includes some extra coverage options.
There is also a thing called Line Item Insurance. I don’t know if anyone will offer it to an 18 year old or if it is available in his state. But what it is is insurance on your drivers license, not the vehicle. You can drive any non commercial license and be covered. It is very cheap. My ex and I paid $25 combined a month for this insurance. It has to have some down side but I do not know what it is. I would have it now but Gieco doesn’t offer it.

Chris asks…
how can i get car insurance quotes without giving out my driver license number or vin? i want instant quotes?

Answer from A General Insurance Agent
Not all Companies require your license number for an insurance quote. Most will require it because they want to give you an accurate quote.
I give quotes everyday without a License number or a vin#. You just have to realize that the less information you give them. Then the less accurate your quote will be.
Also bear in mind that some Insurance Company’s Quote Software simply will not generate a quote without having first entered your driver license number, basically meaning that if you are not willing to give the license number, then that company is declining to offer you a quote.
So the Idea that you “Must” give a License Number is erroneous and not entirely accurate, Most companies train their employees on what data to collect, as a result the agents or service reps of these companies, knowing no better, may actually believe that it is required by all companies or that there is some legal requirement, when that is not the case. Many companies will decline to quote you without it using the rational that if you refuse to give them your drivers license number then your probably not really serious about getting insurance with them anyway and therefore wasting there time, or even worse, that you may be trying to target them for a fraudulent claim.
So in Summary,, Although there is no legal requirement that you disclose your License number just for a quote, many insurers have an internal company policy of no “License Number, No Quote” It is advisable to give your number for the most accurate quote.
Remember the Auto Insurance you Buy is not for “The Vehicle”, The Insurance is for “You the Driver” of that Vehicle. I noted that your question seems to focus on the vehicles for the price quote, Actually, Your Driving record associated with your Drivers license is just as important and often far more important than the vehicle type you are trying to insure.
Insurance is for the “Driver”, not for the “Cars”.
Since you already have a vehicle now, and presumably it is insured, Why not just call your current insurer, they are most likely to give you a quote since they already have your drivers license number and therefore will not have to request if from you again.

Driver license number is optional, vin number is optional.

Donna asks…
How much per month would insurance be at 18y.o.?
I’ll be in the military soon, so I’ll need a car and transportation (in the instance that I’m not shipped to the sandbox).
I’ve tried looking up quotes on progessive and a few other instant quote people online. But the confusing part is they all seem incredibly high. I put in the car as a 2010 mazda 3(which I hope to have), and age at 18, and all the other info. It had me at 800/mo with no collateral or collision coverage. What the f? I tried all different car combinations but they all were high or in the general extreme area.
Can someone let me know what I’m doing wrong?

admin answers:
Try getting a a quote from USAA, they are a quality organization.
Until your 25 the rates will be high, try getting added to your parents coverage, unless they are high risk.
